SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Leon Deich, 93, of Savannah, died Thursday evening, December 16, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home.
He was born July 14, 1917 in Vidalia, Georgia and moved to Savannah with his family at the age of 3. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After his return he worked with his brother, Mickey Deich, for nearly 50 years at Mickey's Beverage Center and later at ABC Liquors. He was a member of VFW Post 660 and a lifelong member of both Congregation B'nai Brith Jacob and B'nai Brith Jacob Brotherhood. He never married, preferring to remain a confirmed bachelor and stayed home caring for his widowed mother and older sister. He was something of a recluse and a loner, spending a great deal of time at his cottage at Tybee, fishing on the beach, and riding his bicycle around the island. He was a sweet, gentle man and he will be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rebecca Deich and his four siblings, Esther Deich, Bennie Deich, Mickey Deich, and Sara Deich Coleman.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
There will be no formal Shiva, but the family will be at 206 Lee Boulevard immediately after the funeral until 5:30 p.m.
