Lawrence L. “Larry” Smith, born October 26, 1933, passed away peacefully at his home on September 30, 2023, with his family and caring nurses. He was a native Savannahian born to Laliah and Arthur Smith. He is survived by a Son, L. Lee Smith, Jr and wife Christi; grandson Lee, III and wife Anna; grandson Andrew and wife Olivia with great-granddaughter Sophie; grandson Turner and bonus granddaughters Mallory and Taylor Atkins. His daughter Cynthia Douglas; granddaughter Lauren Chapman and husband Chris with great-granddaughter Cailynn and great-grandson Wesley; grandsons Aubrey and Charles.
Although he had an earlier successful career in heavy equipment sales, he is best remembered as the owner of Smith’s Texaco. “The Station” was a downtown fixture for 54 years. If it happened in Savannah, it was discussed at the station. One was never surprised to walk in and discover that Larry was outside tending to a customer (i.e. telling stories) while a Superior Court Judge was answering his phone and taking messages. Or, to see Thomas Davis, his longtime faithful employee, sitting in one of the service bays heading shrimp for himself and whoever he was giving them to that day. He loved the friends he made there and continuing traditions he carried on when he purchased the station from George Summerell. After he retired, he got the most pleasure from enjoying the company of his family. He was a treasured Savannah Icon and will be sorely missed by his family and numerous friends.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 pm, Friday, October 6, 2023 at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm, Friday, October 6, 2023 at the funeral home, with the Reverend Dr. Drew Corbett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Spanish Oaks Hospice in memory of Larry Smith.
