SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Lawrence Mintz, 86, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Phyllis Tischler Mintz, died Monday morning, January 31, 2011, at Hospice Savannah.
Born in Toronto, Canada, he was a son of the late Hyman Mintz and the late Anne Tepperman Mintz. Lawrence started his military career in the Royal Canadian Air Force and at the start of World War II he joined the United States Air Force and served in the Eighth Air Force Division in England. He was a radio operator and gunner on the Impatient Virgin. Lawrence was awarded an Air Metal and the Purple Heart for his military service. He was an early member of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. Lawrence owned and operated a furniture manufacturing company that his father, Hyman, started in Detroit, Michigan which relocated to Hardeeville, South Carolina in 1968. He was member of Congregation Agudath Achim and was a Jazz enthusiast and enjoyed playing the game of golf and smoking a good cigar. Lawrence was known for having a giving heart and a loving spirit. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Lazar Mintz; his brother, Burton Mintz, and his sister, Zelda Shay.
Surviving are his wife of thirty years, Phyllis Tischler Tenenbaum Mintz, of Savannah, Georgia; three daughters, Sharon Mintz of Southfield, Michigan, Rhonda Tenenbaum of Washington, DC, and Lori Dubin and her husband, Isreal, of Boca Raton, Florida; one son, Zelik Mintz and his spouse, James Peterson, of New York City, New York, and three grandchildren, Eli Mintz, Harris Dubin and Adam Dubin.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family will sit Shiva at the home - 15 Shipwatch Road, Savannah.
