Lawrence 'Larry' Jules Lasky died peacefully surrounded by his family at home on September 28, 2015.
He was born in Savannah, on December 11, 1933 and was the son of Sidney and Bell Lasky. Larry attended Benedictine and spent 2 years at Emory before coming home to marry the love of his life, Betty Weiss.
'Papa' Larry and 'Bubbe' Betty were married August 29, 1954, and had 61 incredible years together. After getting married, Larry joined the family business, Nat's Men's and Boy's Shop. Larry brought his passion for people to work every day for over 40 years. Larry opened a second men's clothing store, 'Jules Lawrence', which sold 'designer' clothes before people knew what designer clothes were. After closing the businesses in 1980, he became a stock broker for a short period of time. Larry then opened the second title pawn business in Georgia which is still in business today.
Larry was not only a successful business man but was deeply involved in his community and was committed to his Judaism and its traditions. He served on the board and was 1st vice president of the Jewish Educational Alliance. He was the first President of the Board of Directors for the Savannah Hebrew Day School. Larry's true passion was for his synagogue, Agudath Achim, where he served on the board for over 40 years. He was President of the synagogue from 1991 to 1993. He was treasurer of the Chevra Kadisha, the Jewish burial society. He was honored by his synagogue by being made a lifetime member of the board.
Larry loved his golf and playing in his weekly poker games with his friends. He was artistic, creative and loved to make things with his hands. You could always find Larry and Betty dancing together wherever there was music. They loved to travel together and made wonderful memories all over the world. He had an incredible sense of humor that stayed with him right up to the end.
The most important accomplishment of Papa's life was his devotion to his family. Papa and Bubbe were high school sweethearts and were the epitome of a storybook marriage. They had 2 children, Jeffrey Lasky and Jodi Sadler who have lived in Savannah with their spouses for over 35 years. Jeffrey is married to Stacy and they have 2 sons, Darryl and Stephen. Jodi is married to Kenneth and has 3 children, Rose, Beth and Barney. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Samuels, and her husband, Anchel.
Papa taught his family the meaning of unconditional love and the importance of being there for each other.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, September 30, at Bonaventure Cemetery conducted by Rabbi Mose Siberschein.
