Lavine Barnes Cobia, 82, of Savannah, Georgia, and widow of Edward Delano Cobia, died Saturday evening, June 25, 2016, at Candler Hospital due to complications from cancer.
Born in Glenville, Georgia, on April 15, 1934, Mrs. Cobia was a daughter of the late Robert Leamon Barnes and the late Nina Todd Barnes. She was a 1952 graduate of Commercial High School in Savannah. Mrs. Cobia was a committed employee, having retired from the Social Security Administration after 33 years of loyal service.
Mrs. Cobia was a supportive wife, mother, and friend. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, participating actively in her Sunday school class as well as a United Methodist Women's Bible study group. She was also a member of Faith Primitive Baptist Circle Group and served as treasurer of the Mayfair Garden Club.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Barnes Hearon.
Surviving are her son, Eddie Cobia; two grandchildren, Derek Cobia and his wife, Amy, and Audrey Kelly; one great-grandchild, Payson Cobia; two sisters, Martheda Humphries and her husband, Doug, and Corine Jaudon; one brother, Robert Barnes and his wife, Evie; and one niece and several nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Wednesday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at Grace United Methodist Church and will be conducted by The Reverend Steven R. Purnell. Interment will be private.
