Kirk Hunter Monroe of Wilmington Island passed away on Tuesday, February 9th, 2021, at the age of 60. Kirk was born in Savannah in March, 1960 to Shirley Gunn Monroe and Major Phillip Hunter Monroe, USAF.



Kirk grew up on Wilmington Island and lived the last 20 years on Whitemarsh Island before returning to Wilmington Island last summer. ??He was a proud Atom Smasher, graduating from Sol C. Johnson High School in 1978. He attended Armstrong State College, then joined the Air National Guard and became a Radio Communications Technician. Kirk continued to work in the aviation industry after leaving the Guard, ending his 34 year-long relationship with Gulfstream Aerospace in 2020. A lifelong car and motorcycle fanatic and gearhead, in his teens and twenties Kirk raced dirt track motorcycles (motocross); few can recall a time when they saw his motorcycle with both wheels on the ground at the same time. Kirk was smart, funny, and kind, with a low-key temperament and a ready, easy smile.?? He was thrifty with his money and generous with his time and his care for others.



Kirk was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Errett 'Shorty' Gunn and Helen Gunn of Savannah, and Edward Monroe and Lillian Monroe of Charleston, WV; and his brother Bruce Monroe of Rincon.



He is survived by his beloved sister who meant everything to him, Roberta Monroe Ellis and her husband Greg Ellis of Cartersville, GA; his longtime friend Ronna Hayes and her son Jonathan; his nephews, their wives and children: Joshua Daniel Ellis and?? Samantha Wilson Ellis, Presley Aaron Ellis and Wilson Rose Ellis of Cartersville, GA; Phillip Lee Ellis and Amber Godwin, Phillip Liev Godwin-Ellis and Paul Thorin Godwin-Ellis of The Woodlands, TX; and LCDR Dustin Aaron Ellis, USN and Chelsea Covington Ellis, Newport, RI; and many cousins, including Robin Gunn (Savannah) and Rett Gunn (Atlanta), Matt Gunn (Cleveland, OH) and Heyward Gunn Kreutzer (Cleveland, OH); his aunt Joanne Gunn of Alexandria, VA and many cousins in Virginia and West Virginia and Florida.



Kirk will be laid to rest with family in Greenwich Cemetery in Savannah, at a private family ceremony, at 9:30 Tuesday morning, February 16, 2021.
