Kenneth 'Ken' Franklin Hoyt, 68, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Sylvia Lemet Hoyt, died Tuesday morning, March 6, 2018, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Born May 23, 1949 in Danbury, Connecticut, he was a son of the late Gerald Hoyt and the late Jeanette Stoddard Clark Hoyt. Ken lived in Connecticut until he was 22 years old. He earned the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow. Ken graduated from Danbury High School and attended Waterbury State Technical College for one year before enlisting in the United States Army in 1968. He graduated from Army Aviation School at Fort Eustice, Virginia. Ken was sent to Vietnam as a helicopter maintenance technician where he inspected helicopters before flight and flew on the helicopters when extra manpower was needed. After his 18 month tour in Vietnam he was stationed at Fort Stewart. Ken was awarded three Bronze Stars before being honorably discharged.
In October 1971 he married Sylvia Helen Lemet. They moved to Daytona where he enrolled in Embry Riddle Aeronautical University where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Airframe and Power Plant, Aviation Maintenance Management. Ken was a lifetime member of Sigma Chi. He started at Gulfstream in November 1975 and retired in 2003 as the Information Systems Financial Controller. While at Gulfstream Ken earned his MBA through the Executive MBA Program at Georgia Southern University. After his retirement he continued to work for Gulfstream through Computer Sciences Corporation and retired from CSC in October 2005.
Ken always found ways to support the community. He had served as a scout master for the Boy Scouts of America and was an avid supporter of the Girl Scouts. In retirement he continued to find ways to give back to the community. Ken served as League Secretary for Ambucs Exceptional Bowlers League until May 2017. He enjoyed working on household projects and was an antique car enthusiast. Ken loved spending time with his family and especially with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of almost 47 years, Sylvia Lemet Hoyt; his son, Nathan Gerald Hoyt; his daughter, Jennifer Tamara Hoyt and her husband, Evan Mark Ross; his granddaughter, Clementine Mae Ross; his grandson, Langston West Ross; his brother, Ronald Hoyt; his sister, Laurie Hoyt, and several cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the National Museum of the United States Army (armyhistory.org), an institution he was anxious to see come to fruition, or the Coastal Center for Developmental Services, Inc.
