Katherine (Katchie) Doyle Groves, 96, died Monday, November 12, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mrs. Groves was born in Savannah, October 20, 1916, the daughter of Marguerite Hines Doyle and Frederic G. Doyle, Sr. She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School, was a graduate of the Pape School, class of 1934, where she was President of the Student Council, and attended Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York. She was graduated from Trinity College, Washington, D.C. class of 1938.
In the late thirties and early 1940's she volunteered as a receptionist and dental assistant at the Public Health Clinics on Bay Street. During World War II, she worked with the ration board for fuel allotments and sold war bonds.
A member of the Junior League of Savannah since 1940, she served as President from 1946-1948 and on the Board of the Association of Junior Leagues from 1955-1957 as a representative of the Leagues of Georgia and Florida. During the forties and fifties she was active in the health and welfare field in Savannah serving a number of years on the Nursing Committee of the Savannah-Chatham Health Council, for three years on the Budget Committee of the United Way and on the Board of the Juvenile Protective Association.
She was a member of the Board of Managers of the Savannah Public and Chatham-Effingham-Liberty Regional Library from 1961-1965. She was a Charter and Life member of the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, with whom she served actively as a Pink Lady and By Laws Chairman. For over forty years, she was an active member of the Savannah Golf Club Women's Association serving twice as Chairman.
A communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, she served several times on the Parish Council, was an Extraordinary Minister of Communion, and served with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over twenty years. She was also active with the Council of Catholic Women, serving as President of the Blessed Sacrament chapter from 1985-87 and from 1993-95. In December of 2004, she was the recipient of the Bishop P. Garland Award for service to the Parish.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Groves was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Charles Walsh Groves; sister, Marjorie D. Woodruff and brother in law, Dr. Robert T. Woodruff of Rome, GA; brother, Fred G. Doyle, Jr.; and sister in law, Ursula L. Doyle, and brother in law, Dr. James J. Groves of Savannah, Georgia.
She is survived by 7 nephews, Robert F. Woodruff, Sr. (Margo) of Savannah, Dr. F. Doyle Woodruff of Rome, Ga., Fred G. Doyle III (Susie) of Richmond Hill, W. Bernard Doyle (Lisa), J. Kevin Doyle (Amanda), M. Christopher Doyle, and Robert L. Doyle (Susan), all of Savannah; 7 nieces, Katherine W. Slaton (Luke), of Moulton, Al., Margaret T. Woodruff and Nelle T. Woodruff of Charleston, S. C., Elizabeth W. McQuagge (Joel), of Gainesville, Fl., Janet D. Dunnington (Bruce) of Manchester, Vt., Margo D. Harrison (Bill) ,and Kathryn G. Sullivan?? (Wayne) of Savannah; 12 grand-nephews: Robert F. Woodruff, Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Al., Caleb T. Slaton (Alex), of Alexandria, Va., Franklin A. Slaton of Birmingham, Al., 1st LT William J. Harrison III USAF, Moore, OK, Frederic, Sean, Kirk, and Joseph Harrison, Adam E. Doyle, and Ian Doyle all of Savannah, Mathew and Sean McQuagge of Gainesville, Fl.; 7 grand-nieces, Kathleen Woodruff ??Britt (Dorian) of Savannah, Katherine H. Doyle of Richmond Hill, Ursula Harrison of Savannah, Allison McQuagge of Gainesville, Fl., Elizabeth S. Foley (John) of Roswell, Ga., Virginia Sullivan of Atlanta, Ga., and Amy Doyle of Rincon; twin great-grand-nephews, Grayson Woodruff Britt and Christopher Ryan Britt of Savannah, and a great-grand-niece, Beatrice Ardell Flannery Slaton of Alexandria, Va. She is also survived by her first cousin, Michael A. Doyle (Bunny).
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 pm Sunday at Gamble Funeral Service with the Rosary service being held at 7 pm in the chapel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o\'clock Monday morning in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church conducted by The Reverend Jeremiah J. McCarthy. Interment will be Private.
