SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Judge Robert Edward Barker, 82, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Hazel Jenkins Barker, died Thursday afternoon, July 5, 2012, at Memorial University Medical Center.
Born in Hoopeston, Illinois, he was a son of the late James C. Barker and the late Anna Flint Barker. Mr. Barker moved to Savannah in 1947 and graduated from Armstrong Junior College. He was a United States Air Force veteran having served as a Second Lieutenant in the Pilot Program. Foregoing law school, he studied for the Georgia Bar examination on his own and passed it in 1951. Mr. Barker was formerly with the law firm of Dickey, Futrell and Barker, which later became Barker and Edenfield. His partnership with Tom Edenfield is said to be the longest running legal partnership in Savannah history. While practicing law with Mr. Edenfield he served as a Solicitor for the District Attorney's office, the last four years as Chief Assistant District Attorney. Mr. Barker was appointed to the Magistrate Court bench in 1993 and served until 2003. In 2003 he was appointed to Senior Status where he remained until his death. Judge Barker was a longtime member of the Savannah Jaycees and was in the Clown Unit of the Alee Shrine Temple. He was very active in politics and served as a delegate to the 1964 Democratic Convention. Judge Barker was a member of the Savannah Golf Club and was an avid golfer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert E. "Robbie" Barker, Jr., and three brothers, D. L. "Pete" Barker, Del E. Barker and Harold F. Barker.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Hazel Jenkins Barker; one daughter, Barbara Barker Hargrove and her husband, Allen; two sons, Greg D. Barker, Sr. and his wife, Terry, and Judge Michael H. Barker and his wife, Christy, and five grandchildren, Brandi Barker Sauers and her husband, Andrew, G. David Barker, Jr., Lauren Michael Hargrove, Nicholas Michael Barker and Natalie Christine Barker.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Patrick S. O'Brien. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
