SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Joe was born in Warsaw, Poland and moved to Brooklyn, NY at the age of 5. After attending Brooklyn Technical High School, he served in the US Navy during WWII. Returning from the war, he lived and worked in Brooklyn at a dairy product distributor. Married Miriam Leiss (d), of Brooklyn, and had a son Martin. In 1950, Joe bought Hillmark Dairy, a Breakstone and Kraft cheese wholesale route in New Jersey, and moved to Newark. Three months after moving, Miriam returned to Brooklyn to give birth to their second son Philip.
Ten years later the Weinberg's moved to Hillside, NJ, there Joe became active in Hillside's Sinai Congregation and the Erste Bershader KUV benevolent society. Surviving a heart attack at the age of 37, Joe was one of the early participants in the study of the effects of cholesterol and heart disease. Joe eventually sold Hillmark Dairy and began working for Friendship Foods, overseeing Metco Dairy, Friendship's local New York wholesale distribution. After Miriam's death, Joe married Ruth Harkavey (d), of the Bronx, moved to Springfield, NJ and became active in the Congregation Israel of Springfield. Retiring from Friendship Foods, where he was a Vice President in charge of their whole distribution network, Joe and Ruth lived in Springfield and as snow birds in Century Village Pembroke Pines, FL. Due to some illness, Joe and Ruth moved to Rockville, MD to be close to his son Philip and his wife. In 2010 Joe moved with Philip and his wife to Savannah, GA, living at Buckingham South and participating in Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob.
Joe is survived by his sons Martin and Philip, their wives Elandra and Beth, four grandchildren with their spouses, and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at Wednesday afternoon, July 11, 2012, at the graveside, King Solomon Memorial Park Cemetery in Clifton, New Jersey.
