Joseph Lewis Johnson, 80, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Christine Watkins Johnson, died Friday morning, May 15, 2015, at Hospice Savannah surrounded by his family.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late Cary Rudolph Johnson and the late Lucy Lewis Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of White Bluff United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army veteran and graduated from Armstrong State College. Mr. Johnson retired as a chemist after 42 years of service with Kemira. He was a member and former president of both the Savannah Exchange Club and the Bacon Park Senior Golf Blitz. Mr. Johnson was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer.
He was a kind, generous and fun loving man who loved his family and friends more than anything. He will be missed by many.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Christine Watkins Johnson of Savannah; two daughters, Julia Sheehan and her husband, John, of Savannah, and Jennifer Keel and her husband, Jimmy, of Riceboro; one son, Joseph Cary Johnson and his wife, Charlotte, of Savannah; eight grandchildren, Jonathan Sheehan, Matthew Sheehan and his wife, Danielle, Timothy Sheehan and his wife, Megan, Taylor Smith, Alex Smith, Tori Smith, Joshua Johnson and Amanda Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Noah Sheehan and Sophia Sheehan; one sister, Betty Thompson of Ridgeland, South Carolina, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning at White Bluff United Methodist Church conducted by The Reverend John A. Haney and The Reverend Robert T. Thompson, Jr. Interment will be in Hillcrest Abbey - East.
