John Ralph Ennis, Jr., 93, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Dorothy Lee Peeples Ennis, died Tuesday afternoon, May 24, 2016.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the oldest of seven children of the late John Ralph Ennis and the late Julia Wells Ennis. Mr. Ennis was of the Catholic faith. He was a United States Coast Guard veteran having served in World War II. Among a number of other citations, he was awarded the Purple Heart after being seriously injured when his ship was torpedoed. Mr. Ennis recovered from his injuries and later joined and retired from the Merchant Marines. After his military career, he retired after 20 years as a maintenance supervisor with the Savannah Chatham School Board.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Ann Ennis; two sisters and four brothers.
Surviving are two sons, John R. Ennis III and his wife, Bonita, and Robert J. Ennis and his wife, Alyce, and four grandchildren, Daniel, Austin, Calin and Hanna.
A private funeral service will be held at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend John J. Lyons.
