SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Tuesday, September 04, 2012 John (Jack) K. Downs passed away at St. Josephs-Candler Hospital after difficulties following surgery. Jack was born in Guyton, GA on June 9, 1923. He was a graduate of Savannah High School following which joining the 101st Airborne division as a para trooper in the European theatre of World War II. Being a Veteran was very important to Jack! When they decided to build a monument to the lives lost in WWII, Jack created a database of all WWII Veterans from the Savannah Area. The database can be found on the National WWII Memorial website-Washington D.C. at www.wwiimemorial.com .



Following the end of WWII, Jack attended Armstrong Junior College. He worked on the ports with several Stevedoring Agencies during the 70's and 80's. After retiring, Jack worked to receive his certification as a Master Gardner and would often be found working in his yard.



Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Rogers Downs. They recently observed their 63rd wedding anniversary on September 3rd. Jack is survived by 3 children: Cathy Downs Luther and son-in-law Scott, of Monroe, NC; Carol Downs Clanton and John W. Downs both of Savannah, GA. In addition, Jack has 4 grandchildren, Julie Cauble Benson and husband Eric of Marshville, NC, Tony Cauble and Rachel of Monroe, NC, Chip Clanton of Atlanta, GA and Casey Clanton currently attending UNCG in Greensboro, NC. He also has 4 great grandchildren residing in North Carolina.



The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at White Bluff United Methodist Church conducted by The Reverend John A. Haney. Interment will be private.
