John Pershing Cartee, 99, of Statesboro, Georgia and husband of Dora Mae Waters Cartee, died Tuesday evening, December 4, 2018, in Sioux City, Iowa.
Born on May 8, 1919 in Metter, Georgia to the late Charlie Jackson Cartee and the late Mary Lanier Cartee. His parents farmed to support their 10 children: Wallace, Blonnie, Elizabeth, Walter, Charlie, George, John, Josh, Mary and Betty.?? John was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church near Brooklet. He graduated from Pulaski High School where he played basketball on the All State Championship team in 1938. John received a scholarship to college but gave it up after his father died to run the farm for his mother and help raise his three younger siblings.
In 1952, he married his sweetheart Dora and moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he worked for Union Camp (International Paper) for 30 years, retiring in 1982.
John would make you a fabulous meal; he loved to fish and would get a great thrill even if the catch was small. He was one of the most loving, kind, hardworking, self-sacrificing, soft spoken southern gentlemen to his wife, children, grands and great-grands. He was a witty joker and made those around him laugh. He was, most importantly, a man of God who loved to give and serve. He's not gone, he has just changed addresses.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four children, eight siblings, and his grandson, Christopher Cartee.
Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Dora; a daughter, Jane (Mark) McGlohon of Sioux City, Iowa; a son, David Cartee of Guyton, Georgia; grandchildren, Matthew McGlohon and Michaela McGlohon, both of Sioux City, and Savannah (Justin) Genaille of Port Royal, South Carolina, and great-grandsons, Collin, Daniel and Elijah.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, December 11, 2018, at Immanuel Baptist Church - 10290 U. S. Highway 80 near Brooklet.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at Immanuel Baptist Church conducted by The Reverend Sam Martin. Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens in Statesboro.
