John Wilson Andrews, M. D., 83, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Sandra 'Sandy' Lynn Heacock Andrews, died Monday evening, April 21, 2014, at Spanish Oaks Retreat.
John born on November 11, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Charles Wilson Andrews and Mildred Bunn. After living in Oak Park, Illinois for five years, they settled in Waukegan, Illinois. In high school, he played on both the baseball and basketball teams. He attended the University of Illinois, the University of Illinois Medical School, and was a member of Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity. He interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
John met his wife, Sandy, in the operating room while both were students at St Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. They married on Sept 24, 1955.
He served two years in the US Navy out of Long Beach, California, as a Lt. Medical Officer, serving as the ship doctor on four destroyers touring the Pacific.
Returning to Waukegan, Illinois, he joined Dr William Barnes in family practice for 40 years. His patients loved his kind, compassionate, caring touch and stayed with his practice through generations of families.
He served as President of both the Victory Medical Staff at Victory Memorial Hospital in 1969, and the Lake County Medical Society in 1972, and also for ten years as Chairman of the
Physician Review Board at the Illinois State Medical Insurance Exchange, Chicago, IL.
In 1996, John retired from his medical practice and moved with Sandy to a house they built on Skidaway Island in Savannah. They found many great friends and joined the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. Skidaway was a golfing paradise for John and he loved it.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sandy, and their four children: two daughters, Susan Cuilla and her husband, Vince of Severna Park, Maryland; Peggie
Rosenbaum and her husband Bill of Verona, Wisconsin; two sons: Dr John Robert Andrews and his wife Mary, and Michael Wilson Andrews and his wife Leisa of Los Angeles, California.; eight grandchildren, Katie and Kyle Cuilla, Alex and Callie Rosenbaum, Ashley Andrews Ratliff , Stu, and Max Andrews, and Jasper Andrews. All the grandkids adored their 'Papa'.
The family would like to thank Jim Giddens and Priscila Collins and her staff and the Spanish Oaks hospice care.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock, Saturday April 26th, at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
