Joanne Slavitt Portman

d. September 10, 2022

Joanne Lynn Slavitt Portman passed away September 10, 2022.

She is survived by her husband, Barnard Portman; children, Daniel (Michal) and Stephanie (Bridget); grandchildren, Shir (Itamar), Amit, Roni and Orly, and brothers, Mickey & Robert.

She was born to the late Harry and Helen Slavitt of Washington, D.C. June 14, 1946.?? After marrying Barnard Portman, she moved to Savannah in 1968 where she quickly became an integral part of the community and taught kindergarten at the Community School of the Jewish Educational Alliance.

Joanne gave her heart and time through immeasurable service over the decades. Her roles included President of the BB Jacob Shul Sisterhood, Chair of the local United Jewish Appeal women\'s division campaign, Brownie troop leader, and Savannah Hebrew Day School librarian. She performed the holiest of mitzvahs as an active member of the BB Jacob Chevra Kadisha. She helped people in distress on a United Way hotline, brought comfort to hospice patients and individually counseled numerous victims of addiction. Her contributions over the years have left many people in a better place.

A compassionate listener and helper, Joanne was that person who would take you aside at a loud gathering and sit quietly with you to learn more about who you were and what brought you joy and challenges. She was a special friend to many.

Joanne loved spontaneous moments of silliness with her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She also appreciated a beautiful view of nature, a well-crafted handbag, and \"sampling\" sweets.

Joanne\'s faith and family were the cornerstones of her life. Her funeral was held in Modiin Israel, September 13th.
