Jeanne Hanson Grotheer, 86, of Savannah, Georgia and wife of Herman Hans Grotheer, Jr., died Monday morning, July 15, 2013, at Tara at Thunderbolt and under the care of United Hospice.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late E. Gordon Hanson and the late Margaret Parkinson Hanson. Mrs. Grotheer was raised at First Baptist Church and was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was an American Red Cross volunteer during World War II. Mrs. Grotheer attended Armstrong Junior College and then earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta where she enjoyed playing the piano for social functions. Mrs. Grotheer taught school in Chatham County Public Schools, St. Michael's Episcopal School and later at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church School. She enjoyed playing bridge and her time spent at Savannah Yacht Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Commander E. Gordon Hanson, Jr., U. S. Navy (Ret.).
Surviving are her husband and sweetheart of 63 years, Herman Hans Grotheer, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia; one son, Herman Hans Grotheer III of Savannah, Georgia; her sisters-in-law, Iris Gignilliat Hanson of Norfolk, Virginia, Carol and her husband William Conaway, and Louise Grotheer and six nephews, E. Gordon Hanson III and his wife, Barbara, Thomas Gignilliat Hanson, Dr. John William Hanson and his wife, Dr. Bonnie Hanson, Alan Conaway and his wife Amy, Craig Conaway and his wife Lori, Karl Grotheer and his wife Mindy, and niece Lea.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o\'clock Thursday evening at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o\'clock Friday morning at the graveside, Hillcrest Abbey - East, conducted by The Reverend Peter J. Hartmann.
