He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Harriet Smiley and his previous wife, Joan Smiley Throndson.
Jim was a lifelong Buckeye and attended The Ohio State University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was a devoted advocate for The Ohio State University and served on the President's Club Advisory Committee and the OSU Naples Alumni Club Board, where he helped start a scholarship fund for local students to have the opportunity to attend Ohio State University. Jim felt that this was one of his finest accomplishments. Jim was President of Huber Homes Development and Virginia Homes Development (a subsidiary of Virginia Homes). He started the first Remax office in Columbus, (Remax RCI Group) and in later years as a real estate developer. Jim has left his mark with the many homes, buildings, medical office parks as well as more than 4000 units of lower income housing in and around the Columbus market.
Jim was a long time active parishioner of St. Andrews Catholic Church, and developed and built Nazareth Towers for the Catholic Diocese of Columbus. He is currently a member of St. James Catholic Church in Savannah, Georgia. Jim is known as a man of good character, passionate in his beliefs (especially politics), good morals, and a deep sense of personal responsibility where family always came first and charity began at home. His legacy is the character of his children and grandchildren, in whom he instilled a zest and inner strength of life. Jim gave much, asked for little, and never left anything on the table. Taken into God's hands too early, he will be missed by his family and many friends. Until we meet again, God speed "Star".
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning in St. James Catholic Church conducted by The Reverend Mark J. Ross. Interment will be private.
