James Wiley Hayslip -'Slip', 85, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Monday, February 11, 2013.
He was a lifelong native of Savannah. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944-1946 on the USS Benham (DD796). He later retired in 1989 as a Senior Operator in the Power Department for Stone Container located in Port Wentworth, Georgia after 40 years of service. Mr. Hayslip is preceded in death by his wife of many years, Charlotte B. Hayslip, his parents, Elijah and Mattie Hayslip, four half-brothers, two half-sisters, a brother in law, Kenneth Hill, two nephews, Jerry and Terry Hill, and one nephew in law, Kenny Rawlins, all of Savannah.
He is survived by his step-children, Charlene Toler (Tommy) of Bloomingdale, Georgia and USAF TSgt A.R. Breitenbach of Cumming, Georgia; six grandchildren, Thomas and James Toler, of Bloomingdale, Georgia and Christina, Rick, William and Carmen Breitenbach of Cumming, Georgia; a sister, Laverne H. Hill of Savannah, Georgia; two nieces, Sheila (Billie) Albritton of Richmond Hill, Georgia and Becky Rawlins of Savannah, Georgia and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Tom Carruth. Interment will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Memorial Hospital Oncology Department as well as Riverview Health and Rehabilitation for their care and support during his stay.
