James Thomas 'Jim' Murray, 78, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Mary Etheredge Murray, died Sunday afternoon, October 13, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital.



Born in Chicago, Illinois, he grew up in Tampa, Florida and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1958.?? He began working for Sears, Roebuck and Co. while he was in college. After a 37 year career with Sears, where he served as General Manager of their 2000 Dealer Stores in small town America, Jim retired in 1994. He and his wife moved from Chicago to Savannah where they built a home at The Landings.



Jim joined Southside Fire Department in 1995 . He was selected as Rookie Firefighter of the Year in 1997. Jim became Deputy Chief in 1999 and was selected as Firefighter of the Year in 2000. He became Chief of the Skidaway Division in 2004 and Southside Fire/EMS Volunteer of the Year in 2006.



In addition to his work with Southside Fire/EMS, Chief Murray is a Lieutenant with Chatham County Sheriff's Department, where he was selected as Deputy of the Year in 2001 and 2003, and a 'Home Town Hero' in 2006.



Jim thoroughly enjoyed volunteering, fishing, playing golf, and spending time with his family.



In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Murray.



Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Etheredge Murray of Savannah, Georgia; three daughters, Catherine Wiklund and her husband, Mark, of Hinsdale, Illinois, Sharon Murray of Mansfield, Ohio, and Terri Wilson and her husband, Kevin, of Downers Grove, Illinois; two sons, James T. 'Jim' Murray, Jr. and his wife, Deb, and David Murray and his wife, Jen, all of Downers Grove, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and one sister, Anne Jourdan of Tampa, Florida.



The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Wednesday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the Rosary service being held at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel.



The Mass of Christian Burial, with fire department honors, will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at St. James Catholic Church conducted by Father Mark J. Ross. Interment will be private.
