James Michael (Mike) Hooper, 69, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away Wednesday morning, May 3, 2023, at Candler Hospital.
Born in Cleveland, Tennessee, Mike was a son of the late James Cue Hooper and the late Reba Moreland Hooper. He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1972 and attended Clemson University in South Carolina on a football scholarship. He joined the U.S. Army in 1977.
Stationed in Savannah, he met and married Brenda Lacey. He received an honorable discharge and returned to Tennessee with his wife, where he worked with his father for a carpenter union. After the birth of their daughter, Kara, in 1981, they moved back to Savannah and welcomed their son, Michael, in 1982. He spent his career working with A.B. Dick Company, Roper (American Yard Products), InterMarine USA, and lastly St. Joseph Candler where he retired.
To know him was to truly love him. Mike’s kind heart and spirit was evident in all he did and to anyone who had the privilege to call him a friend. His greatest joy in life was being a father. An avid sports fan, he introduced his kids to the love and thrill of the game early on, whether it was baseball, softball, soccer, or basketball. He spent years on the sidelines offering support, never missing a practice or game, and was “Coach Hoop” to so many.
Outside of his starring role as a dad and sweet papa to his grandchildren, he loved playing his guitar, riding his motorcycle, fishing, cooking, reading and doing crossword puzzles – all things that became impossible after suffering a severe stroke in 2022. The last year and a half of his life brought about incredibly difficult health challenges, but he faced them with strength, bravery and courage until the end.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Paul Cue Hooper.
Survivors include his children, Kara H. Ford (Jason), Michael A. Hooper; grandchildren Logan and Ashby Ford, his sister Cindy Rohlfs, and former wife and friend, Brenda Burns, as well as his extended family spread out in his beloved Tennessee, where his heart always felt the most at home.
Mike's wishes upon death were simple: to be with his children and honor his passing by returning to a place that was dear to him. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all of those who have reached out and offered condolences.
