James Alton DeLoach, 94, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Nella Story DeLoach, died May 19, 2015 at Hospice Savannah.
Born in Savannah, Georgia on June 13, 1920, he was the son of the late Dowse and Agnes DeLoach. Alton was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army in Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the Philippines. He later served in France, North Africa and Labrador in the Air Force before retiring to his hometown of Savannah in 1966, where he worked in the City Marshal\'s office, retiring as Chief City Marshal after 15 years of service. Alton loved playing golf and working with wood in his shop. He also enjoyed building and doing repairs for others at no charge. Alton also loved animals and supported the Humane Society on a regular basis.
In addition to his parents and wife, Alton was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen DeLoach; his brother, Dowse DeLoach, Jr., and his sister Geraldine Hope.
Surviving are his son, James Alton DeLoach, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Hendersonville, North Carolina; daughter, Catherine Shaw of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; his grandchildren, Emily DeLoach of St. Augustine, Florida, Jarrod DeLoach of Atlanta, Georgia, Whitney Shaw of Neptune Beach, Florida and Nicholas Shaw of Newport Beach, California, and great-grandchild, Hayden Rae Shaw of Jacksonville, Florida.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the graveside, Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
