SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - James "Jim" Arthur Cook, 84, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Eunice Johnson Cook, died Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2009, at Hospice Savannah surrounded by his family.
Mr. Cook was born August 14, 1924, in Akron, New York, to the late Floyd and Mary Lee Cook. Jim graduated from Akron high school and the University of Louisville. He served in the United States Army in the European front during World War II and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day 4. Jim and his wife, Eunice Johnson Cook, were married July 12, 1952 in Buffalo, New York. He was retired from Union Camp. Jim was a member of Toastmasters International, a past President of Southside Fire Department, member of the Savannah/Ogeechee Canal board of directors, and participated in the Juvenile Court system through the Savannah-Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. He was a driving force of the Youth Challenge Academy of the Georgia Army National Guard program, where he served on the selection committee.
Jim was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church and a current member of White Bluff United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Eunice Johnson Cook of Savannah, Georgia; four sons, Paul Cook and his wife, Rahna, of Savannah, Georgia, Jeff Cook and his wife, Debbie, of Ellabell, Georgia, David Cook of Statesboro, Georgia, and Andy Cook and his wife, Janet, of Guyton, Georgia; seven grandchildren, David, Elizabeth, Dana, Matthew, Sarah, Kayla and Christy Cook. He was also survived by his brother, the Senator Marlow Cook and his wife, Nancy, of Sarasota, Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Saturday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in White Bluff United Methodist Church conducted by The Reverend John A. Haney and The Reverend Jeanette H. Purvis. Interment will be in Clarence Fillmore Cemetery in Clarence, New York.
