James 'Jim' Glover Atkinson, 63, of Savannah, Georgia, died Wednesday morning, November 14, 2012, at Candler Hospital.



Born in Savannah, Georgia, on April 24, 1949, he was a son of the late Colonel William Haley Atkinson, United States Marine Corps (Ret.) and the late Nell Glover Atkinson.?? Jim graduated from Savannah High School in 1967, attended South Georgia Junior College, and graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1979 with a Bachelors Degree in Communications. ??At Georgia Southern he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.?? ??He served on active duty in U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973 and in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1973 to 1976.?? While on active duty he was stationed in Korea and obtained a Radio Telephone Third Class Operator Permit.



Throughout his career Jim held a number of marketing and customer service positions with organizations such as Brown & Root Construction Company, Ace Hardware, and Goodwill Industries.?? An avid reader and history buff, Jim especially enjoyed his occasional seasonal work as a park ranger at Fort Pulaski.?? Jim was active in the Navy League in Savannah and served as President in 1987 and 1988.???? Jim was a member of St. John\'s Episcopal Church.



Surviving are two brothers, William Haley Atkinson, Jr. and his wife, Kathryn, of Bay City, Texas, and John Heyward Atkinson and his wife, Cort, of Savannah, Georgia; five nieces and nephews, Breland Clark, William Haley Atkinson III, Luisa Atkinson, Margaret Atkinson and Haley Atkinson, and three great-nephews, William H. Atkinson IV, Mason Lane Clark and Owen William Clark.



The funeral service will be held at 11 o\'clock Saturday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend Gavin G. Dunbar.



In lieu of flowers the family suggests that remembrances be sent to St. John\'s Episcopal Church, One West Macon Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401.
