Howard Bailey Viar, Sr., 93, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Ida Maude Galbreath Viar, died Tuesday morning, September 30, 2014, at his home and surrounded by his family.



Born in Lenox, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Gus Leon Viar and the late Mary Sue Bailey Viar. Mr. Viar was of the Baptist faith. He owned and operated Hollingsworth Auto Service, Inc. from 1966 until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Viar was a Chief Engineer with the Merchant Marines during World War II where he traveled around the world three times. He was a member of Solomon's Lodge #1, F. & A.M. and the Alee Shrine Temple, where he served on the Director's Staff. Mr. Viar enjoyed telling war stories and loved fishing. His children are most proud that he taught each of them the difference between right and wrong. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Howard Bailey Viar, Jr., and a daughter, Sybil Ann Viar.



Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Ida Maude Galbreath Viar; five daughters, Billie Jean Buttersworth, Karen Faircloth and her husband, Leon, Margaret Sapp and her husband, Bobby, Linda Ivanowski and Kay Viar; one son, Danny Buttersworth and his wife, Penny; eleven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.



The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Thursday evening at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.



The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Dr. Allan W. Bosson. Interment, with Masonic Rites, will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.



Active pallbearers will be Howard Viar III, Joe Ivanowski, James Ivanowski, Nick Faircloth, Kyle Cumbee, Bubba Tedder and Kyle Buttersworth.



Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Director's Staff of Alee Shrine Temple.
