Howard K. Cohen, age 91, of Savannah, GA, passed away on Thursday April 11th, 2024. Born in 1932, Howard Cohen was small in stature, but in the weightlifting world, he was a giant as well as a local legend. As owner of Howard's Gym for over half a century, Howard shaped the lives of many. Howard grew up in Savannah, was a graduate of Benedictine Military School and Armstrong, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Howard taught math for 30 years in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, winning multiple star teacher awards. Over the last 60 years, Howard trained athletes from around the country including son, Michael, who was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic weightlifting team.
Until recently, Howard trained for at least an hour three times a week at the Anderson/Cohen Weightlifting Center, named after him and Paul Anderson, Georgia’s Olympic weightlifting champion.
He was a member of Agudath Achim Synagogue. In December, he and his wife, Carol, celebrated 67 years of marriage.
He is predeceased by his son Kenneth Cohen. He is survived by his wife, Carol Cohen, children, Michael Cohen (Sheryl), Mitzi Cohen, Grandchildren Dallas Sellars (Brad), Nova Oglesby (Eric), Michael H. Cohen (Isabel), William Cohen, Carolyn Cohen, Samuel Cohen. Great grandchildren Navah Sellars, Zarah Sellars, Jordan Sellars, Cohen Oglesby.
Services will be Monday April 15th, 2024 at 11:00am at Bonaventure Cemetery. A Celebration of Life for Howard will be scheduled at a later date.
