SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Howard Euell Cheney of Savannah, Georgia went home to be with his Lord on April 19, 2011, surrounded by his family at Savannah Hospice after a lengthy illness. He was born in Branford, Florida on December 4, 1927, where he owned and operated Howard's Hardware & Electrical Supply Store for 43 years. He retired and moved to Savannah, Georgia in 2002. Howard enjoyed serving many years as an elder in the Branford Presbyterian Church and as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II and was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post 59. Howard loved spending time with his family and was always an avid Florida Gator fan.
Howard will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years, Avis Rahe Cheney; his children Cynthia Cheney DeLoach (Eddie) of Savannah, Georgia and Andy Cheney (Susan) of Jacksonville, Florida; his grandchildren Tara DeLoach Rocker (Walt) of Savannah, Georgia, Adam DeLoach of Savannah, Georgia, Elizabeth Ann Cheney of Washington, D.C. and Meg Cheney Coleman (Rutledge) of Asheville, North Carolina; and great-grandchildren Ford and Isabelle Rocker of Savannah, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma Cheney Fletcher and Arnold Douglas Cheney, and brother, Doug Cheney.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Savannah on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Monday, April 25, 2011, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Branford, Florida at 12:00 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
