Herman Hans Grotheer, Jr. passed away Sunday, September 12, 2021 at home with family and caregivers by his side. He was born August 22, 1925 in Savannah, GA to Ellen O Brien Grotheer and Herman Hans Grotheer Sr.

He was a graduate of Savannah High and was Regimental Captain Adjunct of the Savannah High School ROTC. He served in WWII, first as part of the United States Navy V12 officers training program where he attended Mercer University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the U. S. ??Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Columbia University, NYC. After graduation he shipped out to the Pacific Theater and took part in the Okinawa Campaign. He finished his service at the rank of Lieutenant JG.

After WWII, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Chemistry and attended graduate school at UGA, in Athens. He was employed by the Carson Products (Chemical) Company for 37 years and retired as Vice President of Production. Herman had the satisfaction of being instrumental to the growth of a small almost unknown enterprise as it became an industry leader. He was Carson's 'back yard chemist'.

Herman was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving in various capacities over the years. His favorite role being head painter of the Thursday-Work-Crew.

Herman was a Charter Member of the German Heritage Society and one of the founding members of the South Side Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Savannah Yacht Club and a Life Member of the German Friendly Society.

At age 52, Herman took up long distance running. He helped found the Savannah Striders Running Club and to this day, he still holds the Georgia State record for the Half-Marathon for the 65 ' 69-year-old age group with a time of 1:35:29. In 1981 he qualified for the Boston Marathon and over the years participated in running events big and small including the Honolulu Marathon and untold numbers of Savannah Marathons.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Jeanne Hanson Grotheer, his parents Ellen and Herman Grotheer Sr., a sister Carol Ann Grotheer Conaway and brother Ralph Edward Grotheer.

He is survived by his son, Herman Hans Grotheer III, brother-in-law, William Conaway and sisters-in-law, Louise Armstrong Grotheer and Iris Gignilliat Hanson, along with many nephews, a niece and extended family.

Service Information: Visitation will be Wednesday September 15, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Gamble Funeral Services, 410 Stephenson Ave, Savannah, Georgia.

The funeral will be a graveside service held at 10:00 am Thursday September 16, 2021 at Hillcrest Abby East 1600 Wheaton St, Savannah, GA.
