SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Herman Barnett, 98, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Sybil Seligman Barnett, died Friday afternoon, December 30, 2011, at his home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of the late Joseph Barnett and the late Sarah Friedman Barnett. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1936, he served in the United States Army Infantry during World War II as a company commander obtaining the rank of Captain. Mr. Barnett moved to Savannah after World War II, where he opened Barnett Wholesale Company which evolved into Barnett Educational Supplies on Congress Street. He was a member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob, Port City Lions Club and the JEA. Mr. Barnett was a member of the first Master Gardener class and was very proud of this distinction. He spent most of his retirement years in the garden and sharing his expertise of gardening with others.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Sybil Seligman Barnett; one daughter, Janis Javetz and her husband Lee, of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Gary Barnett, and his wife, Harriet, of Atlanta, Georgia and Rick Barnett of Savannah, Georgia; five grandchildren, Nanci (David) Aronstein, Leslie (Andrew) Walcoff, Jonathan Javetz, Karen (Steve) Denker, Scott Barnett; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.



The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
The family will sit shiva at 203 Varn Drive, starting Sunday from 1 until 3 o'clock and then again 6:30 until 8:30 o'clock through Thursday.
