SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Harris Slotin, 82, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Bernita Hirsch Slotin, died Saturday morning, May 21, 2011 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
Born in 1929 in Savannah, Georgia, he was the youngest child of the late Morris Slotin and the late Elizabeth Schneider Slotin. Mr. Slotin graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1946 and attended Armstrong College. He was a United States Army veteran having served in The Korean War in 1950 and he was a lifelong active member and past President of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob. Mr. Slotin was a retired businessman and was Chief Executive Officer for Time Saver Convenience Stores. He followed in his father's footsteps supporting the Jewish community and his beloved city of Savannah. He was a master of comic story-telling. If there was a group, he told a joke; if there was a party, he entertained. Mr. Slotin ran for elected office in Georgia, and was an early proponent of civil rights. He played two starring roles at the Savannah Little Theater, gave classes on comedy and public speaking, and was a lifelong player of sports. He loved history, music, comedy, theater, politics, sports, and kibitzing in general - but his greatest passion was his lifelong love of learning and study on an extremely broad range of subjects. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Martin Carl.
Surviving are his wife, Bernita Hirsch Slotin; two daughters, Liz Brauser and her husband, Joel, of Hollywood, Florida and Shelley Berlin of Atlanta, Georgia; one son, Jonathan Falk and his wife, Barbara Hauptman, of New York; six grandchildren, Chana Talia Brauser, Bracha Gila Brauser, Shalom Menachem Brauser, Daniel Carl Berlin, Adam Martin Berlin and Eva Ann Berlin; one brother, Leon Slotin and his wife, Nancy, of Savannah, Georgia; one sister, Ida Slotin Wilensky and a large number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
The family will sit Shiva beginning Monday afternoon from 3 until 8 o'clock - 6401 Habersham Street, number 3A.
