Harold Lloyd Attaway, 89, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Barbara Jane Litchfield Attaway, died Saturday evening, January 8, 2022, at Azalealand Nursing Home.
Born in Saluda, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Emory Odell Attaway and the late Etta Witt Attaway. His mother died when he was 8 weeks old and he was raised by his brother and sister-in-law, James Irvin Attaway and Omega Shealy Attaway. Mr. Attaway was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church from 1955 to 2007 and later Cokesbury United Methodist Church and Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army veteran. Mr. Attaway graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in 1952, was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in South Carolina for more than 50 years, and he and his family owned and operated Attaway Funeral Home in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. He retired after 39 years as an analyst in Research and Development for American Cyanamid, which later became Kemira. Mr. Attaway will be remembered as a good dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a Southern Gentleman and always thinking and doing for others. He never cooked until his later years and could make one mean pound cake.
In addition to his wife of almost 63 years and his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Terry A. Barker and her husband, Greg; one son, Steven L. Attaway and his wife, Karen; four grandchildren, Brandi Barker Sauers and her husband, Andrew, David Barker and his wife, Katie, Jennifer Attaway Robertson and her husband, Joseph, and Lindsey Attaway Hill and her husband, Thomas; six great-grandchildren, Carter, Callan, Hunter, Reid, Harper and Ellie, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, January 29, 2022, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by the Reverend Douglas J. Walker. Private interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
