Obituary for Gilford Glenn Rowland Jr. (Pete)
Gilford Glenn Rowland Jr., affectionately known as Pete, passed away in his home on
August 18, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on June 24, 1935, Pete lived a life marked by
service, dedication, and a love for aviation that spanned decades.
A proud graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Pete completed his studies in
1959 and went on to serve his country as a Naval Officer. His nearly four years in the
Navy were a testament to his commitment to duty and his country. After being
honorably discharged, Pete pursued his lifelong dream of becoming an airline pilot,
joining Eastern Airlines. He enjoyed a distinguished career with the airline, where he
flew until his retirement in 1989
Retirement did not slow Pete down. His passion for flying remained undiminished,
leading him to establish a fuel service at Ridgeland County Airport in South Carolina. It
was here that Pete could indulge in his love for aviation, sharing it with fellow
enthusiasts and continuing to be a part of the aviation community.
Pete is survived by his four children: his sons Peter Rowland, George Rowland, and
Robert Rowland, and his daughter Cora Conway, fondly known as Mini and her 3
children. His legacy lives on in them, as well as in the lives he touched throughout his
remarkable journey.
Pete will be remembered for his service to his country, his contributions to the field of
aviation, and the love he shared with his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Graveside services with Navy Honors will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Beaufort National Cemetery
