George Ronald Rovolis, Sr. died peacefully on August 28, 2021. On December 11, 1940, he was born to George and Lois Rovolis. He grew up on 36th Street and attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Benedictine Military School, and Commercial High School. He joined the Marines when he was 16 years old and changed his date of birth to appear 17 years old.
George or Ronnie, as his family called him, enjoyed life. He was a 46 year member of Solomon's Lodge #1, Alee Shriners, and the once very active Cycle Unit. Daddy loved to laugh and laugh and laugh. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and his family. He had three: His Own, The Dan Vaden family, and his Shrine family. He was there when Mr. Vaden opened his flagship Chevrolet Dealership on Abercorn Ext in 1968. In the 1980s, he opened a used car dealership with his brother-in-law Judge Larry Dillon ' D&R Auto Sales, known as 'The Round Man with a Square deal. ' George later helped open Cale Yarbrough Honda and ultimately went back to Dan Vaden for many more years until retiring. He loved test-driving cars, fixing cars, and selling them. When active at Alee, he loved the Cycle Unit family and the many fun times and escapades they all shared. The stories this group could tell!
Daddy had a beautiful Eagle CB Radio during the popular CB radio days and was known as Zorba the Greek. Yes, we were the family with the multiple antennas on our roof. He loved holding the handle on the mike and twirling it like a baton to make a very recognizable sound. He loved 'cranking' it up and talking to people from far away until he got a knock on the door from the FCC. Daddy did have a very spiritual side, and he attended Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church. His favorite verse, and he reminded you every time you left him a message was John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Bette Ann Rovolis. In 1980, he faced the heaviest weight of all parents when George 'Bubba' Rovolis, Jr died in the USCG Blackthorn tragedy. He and Carmel Dillon Rovolis never got over the loss. This one moment in time changed everything. He visited Bubba's Memorial Service every January 28 in St Petersburg, Florida, until travel became difficult. Their family reunion in heaven can only be described as an incredible blessing.
George is survived by daughter Colleen (Freddie) Humphries, son James Rovolis, grandchildren: Holly and Mary Humphries, and Harper Rovolis. His Sister, Rose Ellen Rossiter, and brother, Tony (Linda) Rovolis. Several nieces and nephews, cousins and, Bettie Anne's children and grandchildren, especially little Michael.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Thursday evening, September 2, 2021, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning, September 3, 2021, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by the Reverend Robert H. Dimmitt. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
