SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - George Wilbur Montgomery, Sr., 87, of Savannah, Georgia, died Sunday morning, December 27, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late George Wilbur Montgomery and the late Margaret Russell Montgomery Gould Seales. Mr. Montgomery was a communicant of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and was a United States Coast Guard and Merchant Marine veteran having served during World War II. He was the former owner and operator of Detector, Inc., a private investigative company, and had previously retired from Stone Container after 41 years of service. Mr. Montgomery was a member of the American Legion Post 40 in Stockbridge and a life member of the VFW #4392 on Tybee Island. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Nelle Corvette Montgomery.
Surviving are two sons, George W. Montgomery, Jr. and his wife, Celeste, and Gary M. Montgomery and his wife, Taryn, all of Savannah, Georgia; three grandchildren, Melanie Belveal and her husband, Bradley, Melissa Smith and her husband, Jeffrey, and Michelle Nichols and her husband, Richard; four great-grandchildren, Victoria, Elizabeth and Katherine Belveal and Alexander Montgomery Smith, and his step-daughter, Pamela Duncan and her husband, Kenneth, of Gadsden, Alabama.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Wednesday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday morning in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist conducted by Monsignor William O. O'Neill. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
