Bill was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of George Martin Davenport Jr, and Marjorie Salma Davenport. He passed away at Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
He graduated from Birmingham Southern College, Birmingham Alabama Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa, magna cum laude with a triple major in philosophy, history and political science. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity. Pursuing graduate studies at Duke University, he earned a Ph.D. and a JD in the space of five years. Returning to Alabama he was admitted to the practice of law in 1976 After a short time in private practice, he joined the EEOC as a Senior Trial Attorney prosecuting discrimination cases across the deep South. He was extremely proud to have won major cases in both Alabama and Mississippi saying “ I never lost a civil rights class action case” In 1994 He was appointed to the bench as an Administrative Law Judge with the Social Security Administration. Following training, he and his family were assigned to Savannah Georgia. He retired from the bench in 2015. He also taught over the years at the college level including at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and South University
Bill is survived by his wife, Carolyn Davenport, his first wife Lisa Zammit and his children, Staff Sergeant William Matthew Davenport [Kristen] Joint Base Henderson Hall-Fort Myer, Virginia, Samantha Christine Barrett [Alex]. Albany New York and Andrew Stephen Davenport, Fargo, North Dakota, and his beloved granddaughter Olivia Trinity Nicole Davenport, cousins and an innumerable number of friends.
He was an active member of White Bluff Methodist Church having served in many capacities over the years. His interests were wide including eclectic reading, swimming, and he was an aspiring historical novelist. Bill collected friends all over the southeast, indeed all over the country. He would strike up conversation with strangers anywhere, anytime and soon know their stories.
Bill's visitation will be held Thursday afternoon from 1 until 2 o'clock at White Bluff Methodist Church, 11911 White Bluff Rd, Savannah, GA 31419. His memorial services will follow at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the church.
