Geneva Aiken Martin

d. April 16, 2021

December 23, 1928 to April 16, 2021

Geneva Aldrich Aiken Martin, 92, of Savannah, Georgia and widow of William Charles Martin, died Friday morning, April 16, 2021, at her home.

Geneva was the eighth of nine children born to Pauline Knopf Aldrich and Charlie Tillman Aldrich, sharecroppers in Statesboro, Georgia. When she was two years old, her father died of typhoid fever. In 1931, there were no government social welfare programs. Geneva, her pregnant mother and seven siblings were left to fend for themselves, so the younger children were sent to live with various relatives. Geneva was truly a product of 'The Greatest Generation.' As a child growing up in the Great Depression, she lived a very hard life and learned to appreciate everything she had. She grew up on a farm working hard, not wasting anything, and learning the value of money. She taught her children to work hard, be honest, humble, Christians, spend money on what you need-not what you want, respect everyone and be kind.

In 1948, she married James F. Aiken and they had 3 children. In 1961, she began working at F.W. Woolworth. After several years, she started working at K-Mart as a cashier, working her way up to Personnel Manager.

In 1975, she married William 'Bill' C. Martin and shared a good life with him until his death in 1982. After retiring from K-Mart, she spent her time gardening, sewing beautiful counted cross-stitch pictures, hand sewing numerous quilts for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles and enjoyed volunteering and socializing with friends there. Geneva loved Atlanta Braves baseball, NASCAR racing, and politics.

She was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband Bill Martin, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

She will be missed by her children, Billy Aiken (Linda), Mary Ann Driver Donahue (Matthew), and Frances Cason Murphy, five grandchildren and 6 2/3 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, April 21, 2021, at the graveside, Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
