Gary Stephen Foss died on Monday, September 21, 2015. Born in San Francisco on February 8, 1943, to Harry C. Foss and Alice Noack Foss, who preceded him in death. His brothers Harry C. Foss Jr., Ronald D. Foss, and Douglas G. Foss also predeceased him. He is survived by his brother, Kenneth A. Foss, sister-in-law, Sharon Foss and many nieces and nephews.
After finishing school in San Francisco in the 1970s, Mr. Foss moved to Savannah to visit his aunt, Minna Lou Dixon, and decided to stay. A pioneer in the movement to ensure equal rights for persons with disabilities, he will be remembered for his fierce determination, his desire for independence, and his generosity; he has long been considered a teacher.
An early member of LIFE, Inc., the local independent living center, he was a frequent visitor at the Georgia Infirmary and a supporter of Chatham Savannah Citizen Advocacy for more than thirty years.
A long-time resident of Williams Court Apartments, in his later years, Mr. Foss traveled via power chair in his Thomas Square neighborhood, journeying downtown to shop and visit busi-ness owner friends on Broughton Street. Whether joining the lunch crowd at Pete's Sandwich Shop, celebrating holidays at other Habersham Street eateries, or lunching with his advocate and business associate, Sheldon Tenenbaum, at Johnny Harris', Mr. Foss had an enlivening presence. Intensely intuitive, he was a people person, enjoyed good food and was an avid collector of clocks.
Among his many friends, he will be especially missed by: Sheldon and Zelda Tenenbaum, Ann and Ronnie Hall, Jennifer Brown, Wilhemina Smith, Susan Earl, Tom Lamar and Jim and Kathy McNaughton.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 6 at 6 o'clock, with a visitation to follow until 8 o'clock at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue. Interment will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Francisco beside his parents.
