Gail S. \'Shorty\' Grissom passed away at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at age 84. He was born in San Diego, CA, but was a life-long resident of Savannah and Richmond Hill.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, Onnie and Brodie Grissom, his daughter Patricia Grissom Lamb, and his brother Robert (Bob) Grissom.
Shorty is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Perry Grissom, his children Steve Grissom (Maggie Gordon), Dave Grissom (Beth), Joanie Nelson (Greg), and Margaret Bacon (Olan). He was also blessed with 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Shorty attended Savannah High School and Armstrong College.
Many years ago, Shorty was a member and past President of the Savannah Lions Club where he worked to serve the blind and vision impaired with eyeglass collections and fundraising. He and Mary also served as Girl Scout leaders to Troop 64 when their daughters were active scouts.
As a veteran of the US Army, he served with 10th Artillery Battalion in Korea and received the Korean Service Medal, 2 Bronze Service Stars, The United Nations Defense Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Shorty retired from the Savannah Electric and Power Company (GA Power) with 39 years of service. In retirement, Shorty was an active member of the GA Power Ambassador\'s Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice Savannah or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, from noon until 1:30.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by the Reverend Joseph A. Smith. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Holy Cross section of the Catholic Cemetery.
