Frank Reynolds Hill III of Savannah passed away peacefully Saturday, April 12th. He was 88 years old.
Born February 26,1937, in Savannah, he was the first of six children for Frank R. Hill Jr and Martha Grayson Hill.
Frank grew up in Savannah with a huge family of siblings and cousins who all lived within blocks of one another. He attended Savannah High School, where he was well known for pranks and shenanigans. Frank joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He had great stories of his travels. Once out of the Corps he joined the banking world with his father. He met the love of his life Mildred at Savannah Bank in 1962. They were married the next year. They moved from Savannah to Brunswick, to Douglasville and then back to Savannah. During those moves, Frank and Mildred had four children. Frank ultimately joined the Georgia Air National Guard 117th Tactical Unit and retired after 20 years as a MSGT.
Frank was a 50+ year member of Masonic Lodge 693, in Thunderbolt, Ga. He had the distinguished honor to serve as Worshipful Master and cared greatly for the Masonic Home of Georgia. While living in Thunderbolt, Frank served on the Thunderbolt Town Council. He and Mildred both were intrinsically part of the Thunderbolt community. Frank was by Mildred’s side as she help develop the Thunderbolt Museum Society. They both loved Bonaventure Cemetery and volunteered countless hours with the Bonaventure Historical Society.
Frank and Mildred were married until her death in August 2009, they were together 46 years. He missed her every moment from the time she died.
Frank loved his family, all sports and the saltwater of County Club Creek where his family lived. He was an amazing storyteller. He could keep you hanging on every word of a story you’d heard 100 times. You were always happy to hear it again. Frank was compassionate, wise, he was kind, generous and a great father.
After retiring, he joined the staff of Gamble Funeral Service and his gentle nature eased the families he encounter. His Christian beliefs served him well in the role. Frank would say his mom told him he was Presbyterian (he grew in Independent Presbyterian), his wife told him he was Lutheran (they attended St Luke’s Lutheran in Thunderbolt, Ga and helped open Abundant Life Lutheran in Pooler, GA), regardless he was a believer in Jesus and through HIM all things could be done or overcome. His faith was simple, true and steadfast.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his wife Mildred, and two of his sisters Holly Owens and Martha Hill.
Frank is survived by his three sons and one daughter Frank R Hill IV (Elizabeth) of Savannah, John Stephen Hill (Beverly) of Effingham County, Christopher Teeple Hill (Gwen) of Brunswick, Ga and Kirsten Barrow (Bill) of Wilmington Island. He loved his eight grandchildren: Frank Reynolds Hill V, Grayson Hill, Corbin Hill, Cameron Hill, Corinne Hill, TJ Hill, Billy Barrow and Stephen Barrow. His surviving siblings are David Hill, Rhetta Sutton and Randhi Hill. Frank also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock Wednesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, Georgia.
Frank's graveside service will be held at 11 o'clock, Thursday morning in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia.
If you would like to donate in lieu of flowers, Frank would have chosen the Masonic Home of Georgia or Wounded Warrior Foundation.
