SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Francis "Frank" Ignatius Barry, 89, of Savannah, Georgia, widower of Zaida Roberts Barry and Sybil Faustina Lee Barry, died Saturday afternoon, August 13, 2011 at Joseph's Hospital.
Born February 23, 1922 in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late Francis Ignatius Barry, Sr. and the late Mary Agnes Murtagh Barry.  Mr. Barry grew up in a Catholic orphanage near Washington, Georgia, until the age of 14, at which time he returned to Savannah. He attended Savannah High School. At the age of 17, he joined the Savannah Army National Guard and later enlisted in the United States Army. During World War II, his B17 was shot down over Germany. SSG Barry was held in various POW camps for 15 months until he was liberated by U. S. Forces. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Engineering and later earned his MBA from Georgia Southern College. Mr. Barry retired as a Baggage Supervisor and Credit Union Manager after more than 35 years with Union Camp Corporation. He taught economics at Armstrong State College and at correctional institutions through Brewton-Parker College. For several years, Mr. Barry also served as Troop Leader for Boy Scout Troop 16 in Savannah. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Stephen Drew Morgan, Sr., and two sisters, Agnes Wilson and Mary Kavanaugh.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Barry Morgan of Savannah, Georgia, and Jean Barry Hester and her husband, John Charles Hester of Rincon, Georgia; one son, George D. Barry and his wife, Dominique McGinley Barry, of Savannah, Georgia; six grandchildren, Stephen Drew Morgan, Jr., Jason Andrew Barry, Jean Marie Morgan, Emily Chatham Barry Blackmon and her husband, Boone, Alzaida Marjorie Hester and Molly Catherine Hester; one great-granddaughter, Ally Brooke Blackmon; two step-children, Faustina "Tina" Lee Smith and Harvey G. "Smitty" Smith, Jr. and his wife, Mary and grandchildren from Sybil's family, Christina, Michael, Zachary, Damon and Hope, all of Savannah, Georgia.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the Rosary service being held at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church conducted by The Reverend Adam J. Kasela. Interment, with full military honors, will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
