Fay Merlin Silverman, 93, of Savannah, Georgia, died Monday afternoon, November 11, 2019, at her home. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Silverman, son of the late Louis and Ruth (Weiser) Silverman, as well as siblings, Jerome Merlin (Sylvia), Reba Merlin Freedman (Ted), Arthur Merlin, Leon Merlin, and sister-in-law, Janet Silverman Reed.



Fay was the fourth of five children born to the late Morris and Gertie (Knox) Merlin, who were grocers. Growing up in Atlanta, Fay enjoyed basketball, both as coach and player. Following graduation from Commercial High School she attended secretarial school. Fay moved to Savannah in 1951 when she married Harry. After having children she became the bookkeeper at her father-in-law's clothing store, Karpf's. Following the death of her husband, she became the Time/Leave Administrator for the Health Department's Nursing Division, where she also served as President of the credit union. Additionally, she worked seasonally for H&R Block, volunteered with the American Cancer Society, and was a member of the League of Woman Voters, Hadassah, and Sisterhood at B'nai Brith Jacob Synagogue.



After retiring at age 80, Fay enjoyed traveling to Europe with her sister, Reba, her weekly mahjong game, jigsaw puzzles, needlepoint, visiting her children and grandchildren, and seeing her devoted circle of friends. Fay was an accomplished baker, renowned for her honey cake and monkey bread.



She is survived by her children, Davida Silverman Kashdan (Alan) of Vienna, Virginia, Josef Silverman (Carol) of Greensboro, NC, and Mathew Silverman (Charly) of Boca Raton FL; brothers and sisters-in-law, Irwin ('Buddy') Reed and Ramon Silverman (Renie) of Savannah, Beverly Merlin and Dottie Merlin of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, Kate Kashdan of Washington, D.C., Harry Kashdan of Columbus, Ohio, and Alix Kashdan of New Haven, CT, William Silverman (Julie), Andrew Silverman and Marley Silverman of Greensboro, NC, and Rachael Leah Harris (Aaron) of North Miami Beach FL and Tzvi Silverman (Rachel) of Jerusalem, Israel as well as 10 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.



The funeral service will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.



The family gratefully acknowledges the unwavering devoted care of Cyndi Breland, Falicia George, Nedra Hicks, Javonna Brown and all of the caregivers.
