SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Evelyn K. Scharf, 81, died on August 14, 2010, at Hospice Savannah after a long illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 24, 1928. After graduating from Commercial High in NYC at the age of 16, she went to work for the NYC Board of Education and became the youngest Braille printer in the country. After moving to Savannah in 1973, Evelyn became a long time volunteer for the Savannah Association for the Blind, continuing her Braille printing. In 2007 she was honored by the Association as a Volunteer of the Year. Evelyn worked at WTOC TV Station for seven years as an Executive Secretary and at the Frances Williams Court Apartments for several years as an Administrative Assistant. She was an accomplished landscape painter whose work was displayed at a variety of local venues. She also loved the Theater, acting in many local productions for the City Lights Theater and Little Theater. Evelyn was an avid reader, enjoyed Scrabble, Mah Jong and doing the crossword puzzles each morning, completing them in pen. Evelyn was a long time member of the Jewish Educational Alliance and Congregation B'nai B'rith Jacob.
She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Phil; her daughters, Ellen Hagan (Jeff) of Savannah and Susan Nissim (Jules) of Milburn NJ; her son, Paul Scharf (Julie) of Charlotte NC; her sister Lee Burnett (George) of Walnut Creek, CA; five grandchildren, Lainie and Emily Nissim, Allison Hagan, Jack and Brad Scharf, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
The family will observe Shiva at the home of Phil Scharf.
