Eve Garfunkel Goldmann, 97, passed away on Monday evening, February 8th at Buckingham South in Savannah. Eve was born in Frankfurt, Germany on June 11, 1923 to Fritz and Emily Darmstadter, the second of four daughters. She escaped from Germany with her family in 1938 after Kristallnacht?? and arrived in New York in 1939.
She settled with her family in Washington Heights in New York City. After World War II ended, she met Sylvan A. Garfunkel, a Savannah native and a veteran who served in the U.S. Army fighting in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. They fell in love and married in New York City on May 19, 1946. They settled in Savannah, where they raised their three children.
She devoted her life to helping her family and community. She supported her husband as he advanced in the Solicitor General's office and the Savannah Bar Association. After Sylvan's untimely death in 1966, she continued to raise her children alone and insured that each of them had a profession.
In 1976, she married Philipp Goldmann, an executive with United Technologies and together they lived in Syracuse, NY, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Miami, FL. On Phil's death, Eve returned to Savannah and moved into Buckingham South, where she has lived for almost fourteen years.
Eve stayed active throughout her life. Even into her 90's she was aware of current events and discussed them with her friends and family. She stayed involved in the Savannah community and was a lifelong member of the B'nai Brith Jacob Synagogue.
Eve is survived her sister, Margie Kahn of New York City and by her children, Alan Garfunkel and his wife Lori of Scarsdale, NY and Debbie Popper and her husband David Popper of Yardley, PA and her daughter-in-law Esta Garfunkel of Miami, FL. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren who all loved her dearly and whose names and birthdays she always remembered and by many nieces and nephews and two stepsons, Paul and Danny Goldmann.
She was predeceased by her late husbands, Sylvan A. Garfunkel and Philipp Goldmann, her son, Mark Garfunkel, two sisters, Hannah Blechner and Judith Darmstadter, and her stepson, Peter Goldmann.
The funeral service was held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, February 9, 2021, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
