Ernestine Thomas Underwood, 93, of Savannah, Georgia and widow of PFC Wilburn Theo Underwood, U. S. Army, died Saturday evening, January 2, 2016, at Hospice Savannah.
Born in Wheeler County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Edward Colin Thomas and the late Emmie Jones Thomas. Mrs. Underwood was a longtime member of Coastal Cathedral Church of God. Her husband was on active duty in the United States Army during World War II when he was declared MIA. Over 40 years later his remains were discovered and he was declared KIA. While Mr. Underwood was serving his country, Mrs. Underwood was raising their family. She loved being a homemaker and, more particularly, being the primary caretaker for their daughter, Delane. Mrs. Underwood also enjoyed sewing, ceramics and woodcraft.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Delane Underwood.
Survivors include one daughter, Iva Underwood Holton and her husband, Burney; three grandchildren, Karen Holton Davis and her husband, Bruce, Michael Ellis Holton and his wife, Amy, and Theo Keith Holton; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Wallace, Michael Ellis Holton, Jr., and Lance Holton Davis; one niece, Alicia Linton, and one nephew, Alan Craig Thomas.
The family will receive friends from 11 until 12 o'clock Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Dr. Hugo S. Hammond and The Reverend Raymond P. Hand. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
