Emily Gertrude Gibbon Canter, 94, passed away peacefully in Savannah, GA on November 29, 2016. Emily was a daughter, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother , great grandmother to a large loving family. She was born the tenth child of Thomas and Naomi Gibbon on September 24, 1922 in West Leechburg, PA. Emily's entire life she was known for her love of books and candy. She had a smile on her face where ever she went. She married James Nelson Canter ( Jim/ Old J.N) on September 24, 1958 and her smile broadened as she traveled and enjoyed life. In fact, Old JN took to calling her Smiling Emily due to the smile she sported so freely. They lived a life of adventure. Through out her life Emily embraced a strong love of family and faith. As a member of the Free Methodist Church Emily served in many capacities and strived to serve the Lord in all things.



Emily was a resident of the Leechburg, PA area for 87 years. For the last seven years of her life she resided with her daughter, Debbie Burnette, son-in-law, Dean, great granddaughter Skylar and Basset hound, Ellie Mae in Savannah, Georgia.



She joins in heaven her husband Jim Canter, parents Thomas and Naomi Gibbon, sisters; Margaret Crofutt, Naomi Gibbon, Lewcraza Fryer, Evelyn Parks and brothers; Thomas Gibbon, Robert Gibbon, William Gibbon, Albert Gibbon and Howard Gibbon, many in-laws, nephews, nieces and her special niece Catherine Gibbon.



Emily leaves behind a family grateful for her time with them and plenty of memories to keep her close to them: children - Debbie Burnette( Dean), David Canter, Linda Neal ( Robert), grandchildren - Lisa Maze ( Dave), Brandi Robshaw( Tom) and Douglas Neal ( Carrie), great grandchildren- Alex Steele, Jaden Robshaw, Laken Robshaw, Kiersten Chadwick, Jaden Maze, Ava Maze and Skylar Burnette.



The family would like to express appreciation to Ann Good, Jackie Parker, Vicki Stanford,Linda Borges and Retha Reedy for their kind caregiving and support. A special thank you to Paula Hudson and Hospice Savannah's Steward Center for Palliative Care who were supportive of Emily and her family during her time in Savannah.



A private family memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania.
