SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Elwood "Woody" Eugene Leathley, 88, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Gwendolyn "Gwen" Clark Leathley, died Friday evening, December 16, 2011, at Savannah Square under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Clarence Leathley and the late Henrietta Skeines Leathley. Mr. Leathley graduated in 1941 from Kiser High School in Dayton and began his career at Delco Products and was a co-op student at the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. In 1943 he served his country in the United States Army and upon his discharge he went back to GMI and later worked at the GM Central Office in Detroit, working in the cost analysis department. After 10 years he transferred to Electro-motive in Illinois as Assistant Comptroller and transferred to London, Ontario, Canada as Comptroller. From there he transferred to Terex in Hudson, Ohio as Comptroller. His next stop was Packard Electric in Warren, Ohio as Comptroller. He later went back to GM Central office as Assistant Comptroller then transferred to Delco Remy in Anderson, Indiana as Comptroller. After five years at Holden Motor Company - GMC in Melbourne, Australia as Finance Manager, he retired in 1985 with 44 years of service. Woody and Gwen moved to the Landings in February of 1987. He was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Turk Leathley.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Clark Leathley of Savannah, Georgia; son, Tom Leathley and his wife, Penny, of Reno, Nevada, daughter, Barbara Obenchain and her husband Mark, of Chelsea, Michigan, son, Ron Butler, of Savannah, Georgia, daughter, Shari Hendricks and her husband, Dwane, of Savannah, Georgia; three grandchildren, Jennifer Caskey, Nathan and Jonathan Obenchain.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church conducted by The Reverend James W. Giddens. Interment will be private.
