Elizabeth Donaldson Poole

d. March 26, 2015

Elizabeth 'Betty' Donaldson Poole, age 81, passed away March 26, 2015 at home surrounded by and in the loving care of her family.

A native of Savannah, she was born April 7, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. William M. Donaldson. Affectionately known as 'Betty', she was a graduate of Commercial High School and was later employed with the Citizens & Southern National Bank. In 1951, she began dating James M. Poole, Jr. (Jim) and, in 1956, the couple was married. Looking for the road less traveled, the couple purchased a lot on Talahi Island and constructed a home overlooking Turner's Creek. For the next thirty-six years, the Poole's savored their coastal retreat and spent countless hours on the dock and in the boat with their two sons. As a young woman and Mother, she had an infectious smile, was insightful, amusing and possessed a remarkable clarity about life. She was a kind, unselfish lady, a gracious hostess and was a genuine friend to many. A self-taught gardener she took great delight in growing a variety of colorful flowers and fresh vegetables. She relished the outdoors and introduced her son's to such recreational pursuits as crabbing, water skiing and beach combing on Little Tybee Island. She had a passionate reverence for nature and instilled in her children the importance of conservation and being good stewards of the natural world. She was the epitome of what a great Mother should be. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the sun set over the marsh from the second-story screened porch of her home. Betty had exceptional culinary skills and was especially passionate about using her garden grown vegetables and freshly harvested seafood to prepare exquisite meals. Over the years, she perfected a variety of seafood recipes and hosted many dinners for family and guests. Her deviled crab recipe was indescribably delicious and the envy of any seasoned chef. During the Christmas holidays, her homemade pralines and fudge were highly anticipated delicacies by many friends and family members. In 1992 and upon Jim's retirement from Savannah Electric & Power Co., the couple began a new chapter by building a new home in Richmond Hill, Ga. Nicknamed 'Mema', she was an affectionate and loving grandmother whose hugs and kisses will forever be missed but fondly remembered by her two granddaughters. She was a longstanding member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and later joined Messiah Lutheran Church on Skidaway Island.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, James M. Poole, Jr.; two sons, James M. Poole III, (Jill) and Mark R. Poole (Lane), and two granddaughters, Victoria Madison Poole and Elizabeth Katherine Poole of Savannah.
