SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Elizabeth Mae Palumbo, 74, of Savannah died May 30th, 2012, peacefully at her family's home in Charlotte, N.C. after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born in Rochester, N.Y. and was the daughter of the late Col. Frederick E. Morse and Mildred G. Morse (Driggs). Elizabeth attended Yokahama High School in Japan while her father was stationed there and graduated from Waynesville High School in 1955. She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO. In 1959, Elizabeth married Lt. Louis Palumbo at Fort Dix Army Base in New Jersey.
They moved to Savannah in 1969. She was a communicant of St. George's Episcopal Church. Elizabeth was a past vestry member, a member of the alter guild and a member of Daughter's of the King. She was a past president of La Sertoma. Along with her mother and daughter, she was a member of Daughter's of the American Revolution. She is a life member of the LadiesAuxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart and served most recently as Chaplain and Sgt. of Arms for the Lachlan McIntosh Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 596.
Elizabeth was a beloved wife, mother, daughter-in-law, and friend. She was an avid reader, gardener and correspondent. Elizabeth is survived by her two children, Catherine Palumbo Schumer and her husband, Ron, of Charlotte, NC, and Thomas Palumbo and his wife, Meaghan, of Columbus, OH; her two granddaughters, Claire and Christine Schumer; her sister JoAnn Gilbert, of Bethlehem, PA, her brothers Eugene Morse and his wife, Barbara, of Mt. Holly, NJ, and Paul Morse and his wife, Esther, of Upland, CA; her sister-in-law Carolyn Paulsen and her husband, Peter, of West Palm Beach, FL, and her brother-in-law, John Palumbo and his wife, Tina, of Bethlehem, PA. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Lt. Col. Louis Palumbo (Ret).
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Thursday evening at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning at St. George's Episcopal Church. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park - East.
