Elizabeth 'Bettye' Diana Morekis, 80, of Savannah, Georgia, died Monday evening, July 7, 2014, at her home and surrounded by her family.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Evangelos Constantinos Morekis and the late Vasileia Stragalas Morekis. Ms. Morekis was of the Greek Orthodox faith. She was a graduate of Savannah High School Class of 1952 and for many years served on the annual reunion committee. Ms. Morekis graduated from Armstrong State College and was very active in the Armstrong Alumni Association. She worked many years for the Savannah Morning News. Ms. Morekis was the former owner and operator of America Travels. She took great pride in organizing former Savannah Mayor John Rousakis' frequent trips to Greece. Ms. Morekis was an experienced world traveler. She also enjoyed restoring and refinishing antiques. Ms. Morekis especially liked her volunteer costume work with the local theatre groups. But always her greatest concern was taking care of her family, friends and loved ones, with a generous and kind spirit and warm smile.
Surviving are one daughter, Christina M. Bunn and her husband, Dann, of Savannah, Georgia; one son, Jim Morekis of Savannah, Georgia; three grandchildren, Alexis Daglis, Alexis Lane and Sophia Morekis; two sisters, Mary Mitchell and Helen McCracken; one brother, Charles Morekis and his wife, Maria; one aunt, Anne Morekis, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Patrick S. O'Brien. Interment will be private.
