Elise Swinton Furse

d. July 22, 2009

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Elise Swinton Furse, 97, of Savannah, Georgia, died Tuesday evening, July 21, 2009, at Azalealand Nursing Home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born on June 21, 1912 to the late David Thomson Furse and the late Elise Swinton Furse of Savannah, Ms. Furse was preceded in death by her sister Anne Furse Sipple.
Ms. Furse was a 1931 graduate of Pape School in Savannah and was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Two of the windows in the church chapel honor Ms. Furse's parents.
Although physically impaired most of her life, Ms. Furse did not let her disability stand in the way of living life to the fullest. She spent her summers at Camp Toxaway in North Carolina and at her family's cottage at Tybee. She took many trips to New York with her parents, sister, and friends on board ocean-going steamships operated by The Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah - the "Savannah Line." During the 1930's she and her family would drive to the University of Georgia football games in Athens where they viewed the games from the family car which they were allowed to park near the field because of Ms. Furse's disability. During her youth, Ms. Furse spent a great deal of time at Warm Springs, Georgia where she became friendly with Franklin D. Roosevelt. She used to tell the story of how her sister "dunked" Mr. Roosevelt while playing water polo in one of the pools at the Warm Springs facility. Ms. Furse enjoyed music, politics, and driving her car. She was never happier than when driving and listening to music on the car radio.
Ms. Furse is survived by her nephews, Julian C. Sipple and David F. Sipple (Pam); two great-nephews, David F. Sipple, Jr. and John D. Sipple, all of Savannah, and several cousins including her godson William Swinton Baisden of Jacksonville, Florida.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend Curtis F. Mears.
Remembrances:  St. John's Episcopal Church - One West Macon Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 or Hospice Savannah - Post Office Box #13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416-0190.
